Space for Practice
Movement practice in the rainwater basin
Space for Practice is a weekly choreographic movement practice taking place in the rainwater retention basin of the Floating University Berlin. It invites choreographers to explore their current artistic approaches together with others, to further develop them in dialogue with the specific conditions of the site, and, at the same time, to cultivate a space for regular peer practice in times of increasingly fragile structures.
Originally conceived by Sabine Zahn, Space for Practice has taken place in various constellations since 2022. From 2022 to 2023, it was hosted with a rotating group of invited choreographers. It was then led for two years by the trio Ghyslaine Gau, Lea Martini, and Sabine Zahn. In 2026, Space for Practice is taken over by Choreographisches Milieu.
During the first years, Sophia Tabatadze accompanied selected sessions through drawing, which later informed the 2025 publication Space for Practice. The Space for Practice publication can be purchased as an A0 poster, folded to A4 and enclosed in an envelope. To order a copy, please write to: sabine(at)lovelabours.net
Space for Practice is a regular movement practice unfolding under irregular circumstances: weather conditions, changing movement proposals, different participants, and the many other activities and creatures inhabiting the site. Choreographers meet practitioners, practitioners encounter the Floating University, and the site itself meets the practice. Together, these encounters cultivate exactly what the name promises: a space for practice.
Space for Practice takes place in all conditions and in every kind of weather. We begin punctually at 9:00 a.m., and everyone present shares responsibility for holding the space. Everyone is welcome, regardless of prior experience with movement practice. What matters is a willingness to engage in a shared process of exploration. We speak English and German, and other languages when needed.
The 2026 edition is conceived and facilitated by Choreographisches Milieu in changing constellations: Alice Chauchat, Clément Layes, Daniel Belasco Rogers, Gabriele Reuter, Ghyslaine Gau, Lea Martini, Paula Kramer und Sabine Zahn.
